{"id":2415,"date":"2016-05-24T12:58:03","date_gmt":"2016-05-24T12:58:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thebrandingjournal.com\/?p=2415"},"modified":"2016-05-24T12:58:03","modified_gmt":"2016-05-24T12:58:03","slug":"new-instagram-logo-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thebrandingjournal.com\/2016\/05\/new-instagram-logo-design\/","title":{"rendered":"Is the new Instagram logo a bit like Marmite, in that people will either love it or hate it?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Instagram have decided to revamp their logo to make it a sleeker looking app and more fitting with the internet age.\u00a0 But opinions are mixed as to whether the new logo represents the company and their brand \u2013 or if truth be told does it simply looks like another Apple icon?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h1>1) The change<\/h1>\n<p>Moving away from the vintage camera style icon the brand had created 5 years ago, the new logo is a sunset of colours, with simply a white outline of a camera.\u00a0 An outrage to some, who believed the unique stand out style of the original logo, was distinguishable and perfectly represented their vision for where the brand wanted to be positioned.<\/p>\n<p>The new range of colours and the new design layout has been described by The Guardian \u201cas if the camera was murdered, and chalk was drawn around its body.\u00a0 Murdered at sundown\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Yes maybe a little bit extreme but in a sense it does perfectly describe the use of colours and the new outline drawing of the camera\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebrandingjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Instagram_logo_change_the_branding_journal_2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2418 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thebrandingjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Instagram_logo_change_the_branding_journal_2-300x219.jpeg\" alt=\"Instagram_logo_change_the_branding_journal_2\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Instagram_logo_change_the_branding_journal_2-300x219.jpeg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Instagram_logo_change_the_branding_journal_2-768x560.jpeg 768w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Instagram_logo_change_the_branding_journal_2-380x277.jpeg 380w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Instagram_logo_change_the_branding_journal_2-800x584.jpeg 800w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Instagram_logo_change_the_branding_journal_2.jpeg 880w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h1>2) The reason why<\/h1>\n<p>Instagram were in a tough position as their logo did need updating and to be honest it did need to change.\u00a0 The classic and in some senses, old fashioned, logo just didn\u2019t fit with the internet age or the creativity and image of the brand now.<\/p>\n<p>When Instagram first launched it was about focusing on giving photos a vintage feel so of course the original logo of the leather clad camera was suitably apt.<\/p>\n<p>But society has changed and it has changed fast (just like technology doesn\u2019t stand still, neither does your audience).\u00a0 Instagram grew to a point where brands, celebrities and a younger generation were now using it as their social media of choice next to snapchat and Tumblr.<\/p>\n<p>Vintage all of a sudden became redundant and the visual identity of the company no longer matched its brand position \u2013 hence the need for change.<\/p>\n<p>The new logo does cater to current web aesthetics but maybe an Apple looking, sun blast of colour was a step too far?<\/p>\n<h1>3) Not everyone dislikes it!<\/h1>\n<p>For all opinions are mixed on the logo, for the design community it has been well received.\u00a0 Mainly for its simplicity and \u201cfit\u201d for the target audience.<\/p>\n<p>According to Instagram\u2019s own blog post on the logo change \u201cthe Instagram community has evolved over the past five years from a place to share filtered photos to so much more \u2013 a global community of interests sharing more than 80m photos and videos every day.
